Today, We Are Looking For

The primary role and responsibilities of the Public Policy Manager are to oversee, plan, and execute advocacy projects that align with the public policy structure and objectives, while also leading various aspects of the Partnership's policy portfolio, which involves engaging with members, supporting the development of the Partnership's related public policy positions, and advocating on behalf of the Partnership's positions before key policymakers, regulatory agencies, coalitions, and relevant stakeholders. This role involves working with policymakers, elected officials, relevant stakeholders, members, and colleagues within the Public Policy Division and across the organization to identify, understand, and promote policy issues pertinent to the organization's mission and its members.

  • Align and coordinate the Partnership's issue initiatives and committee priorities with the development and growth of Houston's economy and community.
  • Develop policy solutions that support the Partnership's policy priorities.
  • Engage external stakeholders including local, state, and federal lawmakers, the non-profit community, and business organizations to progress the Partnership's policy priorities.
  • Relentlessly build and nurture relationships with Partnership members and key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Public Policy Committee Engagement to contribute to the success of public policy committees.
  • Work with the Public Policy Division leadership to provide a point of strategic direction representing the Partnership on key issues with members and external groups, including governmental entities and other regional business organizations.
  • Lead major policy and advocacy initiatives, e.g., strategy development, plan creation, and convening stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic guidance and insight to Partnership colleagues at all levels and across divisions on items pertaining to the committees' agenda, direction, policy development, and initiatives.
  • Work directly with the EVP of the division, the CEO, and other C-suite leaders on initiatives of high priority.
  • Consistently produce deliverables, such as advocacy letters, position statements, and other related collateral.
  • Attend and participate in major events, coalition engagements, panel discussions, and other opportunities to serve as the face of the organization related to policy priorities.
  • Develop a strong understanding of policy issues and how they translate to the Partnership's policy priorities and advocacy objectives.
  • Use policy knowledge to develop written content and materials to support the execution of policy programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are desirable for job success:

  • Strong written communications skills, ability to handle content development, write, and edit for various audiences, both internally and externally.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, working collaboratively with others, and relationship building. Must be comfortable with presenting to and/or interacting with colleagues and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with limited supervision.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, detail-oriented, and ability to handle multiple projects at one time.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree preferred

Required Experience

3-5 years' experience in a related field is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Good vision and hearing acuity (with adaptive aids if necessary).
  • Manual dexterity and skillful use of computer keyboard.
  • Physical exertion includes bending, pushing, standing, and walking. Must be able to move or lift approximately 25 pounds on occasion.

Mental and Aptitude Requirements

  • Job requires the ability to hear, see, and talk; analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning and decision-making skills.
