At Houston Methodist, the Nurse Midwife position is responsible for managing and providing women’s health care services related to pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, family planning and routine gynecological needs. This position will deliver patient care in an inpatient and outpatient setting in an organized and effective manner. The Nurse Midwife position scope of practice embodies the behaviors associated with the Leadership, Art and Science of Nursing as the advanced clinician at the Expert level of Benner’s model of clinical practice. This position practices relationship-centered care in concert with Houston Methodist values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Communicates in a comprehensive, unbiased, and open way, which includes active listening and teaching, with all interprofessional health team members in the department and across the organization. • Facilitates the promotion of teamwork and active involvement of others in team meetings, department activities, and process improvement. Mentors others in time management and resource utilization. • Identifies, plans, and implements patient care education for the clinic in collaboration with the Physician for the team members. Develops informational and educational resources for specific population in the clinic setting. Advocates on patient/family’s behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns; empowers patients/families to speak/represent selves when possible. • Conducts self in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity, equity and inclusion principles. Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability. SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Develops comprehensive plans of care in collaboration with physicians, patients and families; incorporates education and family planning. Practices in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity and inclusion principles. • Manages assignment of complex patients and other clinic demands. Coordinates with the healthcare team to facilitate communication with patient and family across the continuum of care, authorizing prescription refills as appropriate. • Assists interprofessional healthcare team with issue resolution. Contributes to meeting department target for patient satisfaction. QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Provides safe and effective care to complex patients and leads interprofessional care planning for identified patient populations by initiating outcome, quality and safety improvement activities. Integrates and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols and leads improvements in patient safety-related processes. • Anticipates/prevents and resolves/elevates early declines in patient condition and emergent situations. Identifies normal/abnormal health characteristics, develops plan of care, initiates appropriate interventions, and evaluates care outcomes on defined patient populations(s). Labors with the patient and may deliver the baby. • Leads/assists in improvements/initiatives in patient safety processes at the clinic and service line level, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses and identifying solutions by collaborating with the interprofessional team. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety. FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Implements department strategies to achieve financial target and mentors others to do the same through timely documentation of care, decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and other areas according to department specifications. • Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed. GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Leads colleagues and staff in identifying areas for improvement in patient care or department operations and developing solutions by participating in department projects or interprofessional team activities. EDUCATION • Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section • Master of Science – Advance Practice Nurse Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) WORK EXPERIENCE • Two years of experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse, Certified Nurse Midwife or four years of clinical experience in L&D or Women’s Health services LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS – REQUIRED • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 days OR • RN-Temp – Registered Nurse – Temporary State Licensure within 60 days AND • APRN – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse – Texas Board of Nursing AND • APRN-CNM – Certified Nurse Midwife NP – State Licensure AND • AP – Prescriptive Authority – Texas Board of Nursing AND • DEA – Narcotics License (DEA) within 6 months AND • BLS – Basic Life Support (AHA) AND • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles • Demonstrates highly developed assessment, clinical, documentation, and analytical skills • Uses therapeutic communication to establish a relationship with patients, families and interprofessional team to collaborate on the plan of care • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skill as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and their families • Demonstrates proficient time management skills • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS WORK ATTIRE • Uniform No • Scrubs Yes • Business professional Yes • Other (department approved) No ON-CALL* *Note that employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies (ie.
