TITLE: Clinical Nurse Specialist Advanced Practice - Behavioral Health

JOB OVERVIEW: The Clinical Nurse Specialist Advanced Practiced serves as the clinical expert in the advancement of nursing and clinical practice and continuous improvement of behavioral health and SUD patient care. This is done through involvement advancing clinical care, program development, education, research, organizational support, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This position will identify, plan, manage, deliver, and evaluate professional development interventions for health care professionals based on their area of clinical expertise.

DEPARTMENT: Patient Care Services Education

WORK HOURS: Hours may vary to cover service needs.

REPORTS TO: Director, Professional Development & Education (PDE)

Prerequisites:

Master's degree in Nursing with clinical focus from an accredited school of nursing, required. Doctorate, preferred.

Minimum of five years' experience working with the behavioral health population preferable in an inpatient, acute care setting. Thorough knowledge and understanding of protocol, procedures, and standards related to the behavioral health population. Demonstrated clinical expertise in working with the behavioral health patient population as well as experience with evidence-based practice and standards development and process and quality improvement. Must have knowledge of adult learning principles, curriculum design and change process.

Active Advance Registered Nurse Practitioner-CNS (ARNP-CNS) to practice in WA State.

CNS certification, required.

Qualifications:

Serve as a consultant, educator, researcher, and clinical expert in behavioral health and substance use disorder populations.

Facilitate and coordinate clinical education for professional development of nursing and other staff assigned to a specialty unit area and serves as a practitioner of specialized patient care.

Ability to assess the behavioral health needs of patients, evaluate the effectiveness of plans which address them.

Knowledge of the DSM 5 and behavioral health and substance use disorders

Demonstrates expertise and understanding in best practices for the treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders in the adolescent and adult population.

Provide clinical expertise to support direct patient care in the management of complex populations and complex care needs.

Provide system and organizational level support in the research of best practices and standards of care, writing of policies, procedures, protocols, and best practices in care delivery and documentation.

Essential Responsibilities And Competencies:

Completes assessment and plans appropriate to the patient's physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and developmental state.

Develops, implements, and evaluates nursing care standards within the area of specialization.

Collaborates with other disciplines in consultation, teaching management, and research activities to improve outcomes in nursing practice and enhance the healthcare environment.

Provides consultation support and routine collaboration with psychiatry.

Provides brief interventions using evidenced based techniques such as Behavioral Activation, Problem-Solving Treatment, Motivational Interviewing, or other appropriate treatment modalities.

Assists the multidisciplinary team in the implementation and evaluation of the plan of care. Provides expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex patients and populations.

Clinically evaluates and integrates appropriate research findings and best practices into nursing practice. Identifies the clinical and professional development needs of nursing staff, plans, and provides education in area of expertise.

Works collaboratively with department members, unit managers, and other content experts to maintain staff clinical competency within service area.

Participates in providing educational programs and activities for staff to enhance the delivery of care. Collaborates with nursing education regarding educational requirements of nursing staff.

Identifies and participates in opportunities to share skills, knowledge, and strategies for patient care and system improvement with colleagues and other healthcare providers. Provides system level leadership with the ability to manage change and empower others to influence clinical practice within and across systems. Generates and evaluates evidence-based practice and research to ensure adherence to standards of care, broaden the scope of clinical practice, and/or assist with implementation of practice changes.

Utilizes research and the quality improvement process to assure quality and value in patient outcomes.

Develops, implements, and revises programs that enhance cost effectiveness and quality patient care. Utilizes the guidelines to recognize opportunities for improvement in clinician documentation, and to formulate and generate clear, compliant, and concurrent questions to those clinicians. Integrates existing organizational standards and quality improvement/patient safety initiatives into orientation and on-boarding program.

Develops in-service training programs which enhance clinical care. Establishes regular and ongoing education which meets the needs of the clinical staff.

Coordinates the review, revision and/or formation of departmental clinical policies and procedures, standards, and care plans.
