Role description:

Arcadis is seeking an Ecology Intern to join our Enviro Socio Permitting team in Virginia. The successful candidate will conduct desktop reviews and support field data collection for wetlands delineations, special-status species habitat assessments, and environmental assessments. This role will primarily support Arcadis' planning and permitting team working on linear infrastructure (including natural gas and rail projects) and renewable energy projects in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse. The position will require a candidate to work both collaboratively with a team of resource specialists and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Arcadis offers a flexible working environment and follows a hybrid work structure. A successful candidate can expect to work remotely and from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks and teams

Role accountabilities:

As an Ecology Intern, you will apply your technical knowledge to work with client teams to provide high quality deliverables to support planning and permitting for oil and gas, renewable energy, rail, and linear utility clients. You will be an important member of the Mid-Atlantic biological team interacting with other junior level biologists/ecologists, senior technical experts, and project managers as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team. 

Your primary job functions will include conducting desktop assessments and field surveys (e.g., wetland and waterbody delineations, flora and fauna surveys, and habitat assessments) to evaluate potential project impacts to natural resources. You will be responsible for using handheld global positioning system units and tablets to collect data during field surveys. This position will require the ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours over difficult terrain and in inclement weather. Up to 50% travel is expected, and overnight travel will be required. Additionally, you will assist project teams in the preparation of technical reports, agency consultation letters, and permit applications for submittal to various federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.  

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, botany or other natural resource related field
  • Knowledge of Mid-Atlantic natural resources, including some experience with either wetlands, vegetation, or wildlife

 Preferred qualifications for the role include: 

  • Prior internship or 1 year of work experience in the environmental field or advanced degree in environmental science or similar
  • Experience with wetland ecology in the Mid-Atlantic region 
  • Experience using GPS field technology 
  • Experience with ArcGIS, GoogleEarth and other desktop mapping applications
