WHO WE ARE
The Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation is a civilian agency managed by professionals in the correctional field. To protect the public and citizens of Montgomery County by providing a wide range of constructive, professional correctional services for pretrial and convicted detainees. The Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation Food Service Department is operated by employees of the county. A total of three full service traditional, cook-serve kitchens are located in each of the two detention facilities and Pre-Release and Reentry Services Center.
The mission of the Food Service Department is to serve nutritionally balanced, well prepared, and attractively served meals for the incarcerated individuals, residents and staff within the DOCR facilities. Training in food service operations is provided to those incarcerated individuals and residents that work in our food service facilities. Interested incarcerated individuals and resident kitchen workers may develop skills to prepare them for employment in the food service industry upon release.
This recruitment will establish an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies. Position may be located at either the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) in Boyds, or at the Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) in Rockville, or the Pre-Release and Reentry Services (PRRS) in Rockville, depending upon the area of specialty/interest and the needs of the Department.

Correctional Dietary Officers are responsible for providing direct supervision, guidance, and training to incarcerated individuals/resident workers in carrying out the day-to-day preparation and service of food in a large-scale food services operation within a secure correctional setting.

- Preparing meals from standardized recipes using safe food handling practices.

Minimum Qualifications
If filled at the Correctional Dietary Officer I, Grade 17:
Experience: Two (2) years of satisfactory experience in the food service industry (as in a commercial restaurant, correctional facility, a hospital, a long-term care facility, or in the armed forces or in another type of equivalent food service operation); this experience must include but is not limited to applying proper procedures for equipment sanitation, handling food, preparing and serving food, and meal production/service time requirements.
If filled at the Correctional Dietary Officer II, Grade 18:
Experience: Three (3) years of satisfactory experience in the food service industry (as in a commercial restaurant, correctional facility, a hospital, a long-term care facility, or in the armed forces or in another type of equivalent food service operation); this experience must include but is not limited to applying proper procedures for equipment sanitation, handling food, preparing and serving food, and meal production/service time requirements.
REQUIRED FOR ALL LEVELS:
Education: Completion of high school, High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland, possession of a High School equivalency certificate, or a certified transcript or test scores, each as acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education in accordance with the regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (Title 12, Subtitle 10, Code of Maryland (COMAR)).
LICENSE:
- Must successfully complete the Food Service Sanitation Management course and Allergen Training, and obtain a valid Montgomery County Certified Food Service Manager Certificate within sixty (60) days from date of hire. Certification must be maintained throughout employment in this occupational class.
- Must successfully complete the Entrance Level Correctional Training Program specified by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and possess a certificate of completion within twelve (12) months of hire. Successful completion of in-service training, as specified, is also required.
- Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence may be required.
CITIZENSHIP AND AGE:
- Individuals appointed to this position must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of appointment and be either a citizen of the United States or a resident alien consistent with COMAR 12.10.01.04 et seq.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences
Interview Preference will be extended to candidates who demonstrate:
- Experience using institutional food service equipment for the preparation of meals.
- Experience applying a working knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).
- Experience communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and incarcerated individuals/residents.
- Ability to Respond quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergencies, and be able to de-escalate situations

Leave Benefits
Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Retirement Benefits
All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years.
