Job description: Clinical Nurse Educators are registered nurses who know how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. Clinical Nurse Educators apply skills and experience to ensure optimal clinician knowledge and skills through education and training in either general or specialized nursing education and / or training. Serves as an instructor for entry or intermediate clinical nurse educators. Leads implementation of new programs.
Collaborates with Children’s Hospital Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse educators to ensure a cross pollination of knowledge across the continuum.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of recent registered nurse experience with inpatient level IV NICU Care
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- American Heart Association (AHA) or UCDH-issued BLS CPR Certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification within 6 months of hire
- Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
- BSN required
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language and utilize medical terminology appropriately

- Strong skills in written and verbal communications to collaborate productively in a team environment with all levels of internal and external personnel and to convey complex clinical information in a clear, concise manner.
- Thorough knowledge of a broad spectrum of professional nursing practices and issues.
- Thorough knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess moderately-complex problems to develop potential solutions.
- Demonstrated ability in assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in specialty area preferred
